We are so lucky to be situated in one of the most beautiful regions of Austria, and one with so much history, meaning that there is plenty to see and do in Salzburg area!
Below is our suggested itinerary for a week’s stay at Haus Schneeberg between May – November.
We recommend purchasing the Salzburgerland card as it offers you free admission to many of the attractions in the region.
Day One - A day in Salzburg City
Salzburg owes it’s world-wide fame to the incomparable magic of it’s architecture, the beauty of it’s surrounding countryside and its good fortune to have Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart first see the light of day here in 1756.
The city‘s efforts to preserve its historic Old Town in its original form, were rewarded with the addition of Salzburg to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
Visit the famous Hohensalzburg fortress built in 1077, Hellbrun Palace, with it’s elaborate fountains. See Mozart’s place of birth and see how he and his family lived, and instruments that he played.
Explore the many museums such as the Salzburg museum detailing the history of Salzburg, the toy museum, and the Christmas museum. Take a cable car trip up the mountain to see magnificent views of the area.
The Salzburgerland card offers you 24 hours free admission into many attractions, including those above.
Eisriesenwelt is truly impressive – you will need about 3 hours for this tour up the mountain and into the largest ice cave in the World! You start the tour with a 20 minute walk up to the bottom of the cable car, then take the speedy cable car up the mountain (or walk if you prefer, but we don’t advise this!). Then on arrival at the top, there is another 20 minute walk to the entrance of the ice cave with some fantastic views over the Hochkonig mountains and the Salzach river. Then take the guided 60-70 minute tour in the ice caves and see the impressive walls and columns of ice, and hundreds of steps! Remember to take warm clothing and sturdy shoes!
Hohenwerfen castle sits high and proud above the town of Werfen, and is an impressive site! You can either walk up to the entrance – about 20 minutes, or take the ride up the mountain. The castle is on a fairly steep incline inside, and you can join in the guided tour of the castle, and see the magnificent bird show with eagles and birds of prey flying around you. Remember to check out what times the bird shows are on before you visit so you don’t miss out!

Day 3 - Golling Waterfall and the Lammerklamm
Visit the impressive Golling waterfall, with a drop of 75m, then go onto Lammerklamm – a gorge on the Lammer river with some stunning scenery. One direction leads you on a 30 minute journey to one end of the gorge and the other direction is a short journey with steep steps to the other end and leads to magnificent views of the gorge and river. Then how about a Rodelbahn down the mountain at Abtenau to finish the day off? All of these attractions have free admission with the Salzburgerland card.
Day 4 - A day in the Hochkönig
Spend a day appreciating the mountains of the Hochkönig! Take the Karbachalm gondola up the mountain and then there are various choices. You can walk up to the top of Schneeberg mountain to see the amazing views. If you have young children, Toni’s Almspeilplatz is ideal with a 1km trail with lots of activities to do such as treehouses to climb, a giant inflatable pillow to jump on, roundabouts etc. Then how about stopping for lunch in the Karchbach alm restaurant and experience the local food? Then take a trip down the mountain via gondola, or via mountain carts! If you have any time left in the day, how about a trip to the local air swimming pool to cool down? The Hochkönig card gives you free use of the summer mountain lifts and free access to the swimming pool.
Day 5 - Hohe Tauern and Krimml
With an elevation difference of 380 m (3 falls), the Krimml Waterfalls are the highest in Europe and received the Nature Protection Diploma of the Council of Europe in 1967. A spectacular attraction well worth a visit.
Adjacent to the entrance of the extraordinary natural wonder of the Krimmler waterfalls, the gates open to the Krimmler WaterWorld with an interactive cinema experience, telescope, and an aqua park.
A visit to the Hohe Tauern National Park in Mitersill is getting under the skin. The “Experience-Stations” (eagle flight panorama, 3D cinema, marmot friends, avalanche dome, …) will bring the visitors into the thick of the biggest nature reserve of the World. The Salzburgerland card gives free admission to these attractions.
Day 6 - Relaxation day in a Thermal Spa
Take your pick from Therme Amade in Altenmarkt, Alpentherme in Bad Hofgastein or Aqua Salza in Golling and relax for the day!
All of them have family facilities with slides and indoor and outdoor pools.
Note that children under 16 are generally not allowed in the sauna areas.
The Salzburgerland card gives a 4 hour free entry to these spas.

Grossglocknerstrasse – Without a doubt, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is among Europe’s most sensational panoramic roads. The mountain road leads into the heart of the High Tauern National Park with its 48 km of streets and 36 turns nestling against the mountain, following the natural course of the terrain and helping visitors to experience the great high alpine scenery at first hand. But that’s not all! Museums, nature and panoramic trails, unique exhibitions, information points, playgrounds and grand waterfalls are waiting for you at twelve select spots. Come with us and discover the world of the golden eagle and the marmots!
Salt Mines – in Hallein, Hallstatt and Altausee – discover the history of the salt mines and walk through the caves, and slide down the 65m long wooden slide used by the miners.
Hallstatt – Hallstatt is one of Austria’s most picturesque village on Lake Hallstatt’s western shore in Austria’s mountainous Salzkammergut region. Its 16th-century Alpine houses and alleyways are home to cafes and shops. A funicular railway connects to Salzwelten, an ancient salt mine with a subterranean salt lake, and to Skywalk Hallstatt viewing platform. A trail leads to the Echern Valley glacier garden with glacial potholes and Waldbachstrub Waterfall.
Mautendorf and it’s castle – a market town with picturesque views.
More local walks in the Hochkönig – eg a walk up Hochkeil, a walk to Zachhofalm for a herbal treat, or for the hikers that fancy a challenge, a walk up to Riemannhaus at 2130m above Maria Alm.
