The Hochkönig region is renouned for it’s culinary delights, and we highly recommend you try out a few of the mountain restaurants during your stay. Here are a few of our favourite mountain restaurants!
Tiergartenalm Mühlbach am Hochkönig
On the piste down from the top of Kings Cab towards Mühlbach.
Great on a sunny day as it has a south facing terrace, and newly opened for the 2016 season is the extended indoor eating area with traditional decor and fantastic views. There is a self service area and a serviced area. We recommend the daily specials – we have never been disappointed! It is popular for Apres Ski, and on Wednesdays during the ski season, the pistes are open late so you can ski tour to the alm for an evening meal.
Zachhofalm, Dienten
Under the Zachhof lift, Dienten.
This alm offers organic, local produce. In the summer they have a herb garden, which they use in their tasty dishes all year around. They also have some home made product for sale such as oils and herbs. We love the pancakes with cream cheese and pickled vegetables, and the homemade gluhwien, and they quite often have a home made special for desert!
You need to book a table to eat here – you can do this directly on their website
Steinbockalm, Dienten
At the top of Gabühel, in between Dienten and Hinterthal.
They pride themselves on top quality gourmet food, and employ 2 gourmet chefs. The Schweinsbraten (roast pork) is in our opinion, the best in the region. It also has fantastic views, a great outside sitting area, and when it’s snowing, a lovely roaring fire inside. Expect to be seated with others as it gets very busy and they try to ensure everyone gets to eat!
It also is open late on Thursday evenings in the ski season so you can finish off your skiing day with a meal and ski down after the pistes have closed. Note that there are no buses in between Dienten and Mühlbach in the winter, so you will need alternative transport to get back to the village after the ski lifts close.
Hochmaisalm, Hinterthal
Situated on the red piste above Hintertal.
The Rostis are our favourite meal! They also organise evening events where you can take the Pisten Bully (piste machine) up from Hintertal to the restaurant on Wednesdays and Fridays. Booking is essential for evenings, and they have a separate evening menu. There are a few meals you must prebook in advance for evening meals– ribs, pork shank, meat cooked on a hot pyramid stone, steak cooked on a stone.
Zapferlalm, Mühlbach am Hochkönig
Next to the bottom of Kings Cab
Great for Apres Ski- fantastic atmosphere with great staff!
You can reserve for an evening meal, and get a ride up and down with the skidoo!
Scheppal Alm, Mühlbach am Hochkönig
On the 1a blue family run down to Mühlbach.
A good last stop for Apres Ski, and has the best Kaiserschmarren (fluffy pancakes) in the area (in our opinion!)
It is approx. a 45 min walk from Haus Schneeberg, so you can also eat here in the evening and have a digestive walk back, or stop here at the end of your ski day and ski back via the skiweg, subject to snow conditions!
Hochkönig Alm, Dienten
In between Mühlbach and Dienten.
Excellent food for a large Alm, and great if you are in a hurry. It offers both self service and waiter service. Good for daily specials. We like the Hirsch Burger (venison burger)!
Gabühelhütte, Dienten
On the 21 red piste from the top of Gabühel towards Dienten.
We love the Black pudding Gröstl! (black pudding in mixture of fried potato, onions, bacon bits and vegetables.
Schweizerhütte, Mühlbach am Hochkönig
Up at Hochkeil, behind Arthurhaus
A fantastic experience for cheese lovers! Every Thursday night the cosy restaurant opens to do cheese fondues with their own blend of cheeses. You will need to reserve, as seating is limited and it is very popular! The restaurant will also provide free taxis to and from the restaurant on request.
