There are plenty of tasty alms (mountain restaurants) and huts to choose from when you are out and about exploring the mountains, but what about in the evenings when you prefer not to cook, or get a takeway, and would like a meal out? Which are the best restaurants to visit?
Here are a selection of the best restaurants in Mühlbach am Hochkönig, and why we and our guests love them the most, so you can choose your favourite while you are here.

Best Family restaurant, and our guests most favourite
Andlwirt’s Almstube
Situated next to the church in the village, just off the main road, Andlwirt’s is a rustic Austrian restaurant with a sunny terrace.
It is the oldest restaurant in the village, having been run by 4 generations of the family Scherer, and offers a cosy and traditional atmosphere.
Families love it the most as it offers a good range of tasty traditional Austrian dishes for adults and children, as well as a range of pizzas. You will love the friendly service!
Best Bar and restaurant
Mesnerhaus
Right in the centre of the village, this is the place to be! With a modern, trendy, bar, and a great atmosphere with a friendly service.
The restaurant area has a more traditional feel to it, and you can order tasty pizzas and burgers, and traditional Austrian dishes. They also offer a takeaway service.
Good quality, tasty food for everyone, with an upbeat atmosphere. You may bump into your ski instructor in the bar area!
Best Vegetarian restaurant
Scheppal Alm
Situated on the family run blue piste, just above the Karbachalm mountain lift.
You can either drive here in 2 minutes from the centre, or take a 30 minute walk, or stop here at the end of a ski day before returning home!
Great after a day’s skiing, or hiking, with a good apres ski atmosphere late afternoons and evenings. Offering a good, varied menu, with a few vegetarian options such as vegan polenta gnocchi with ratatouille, mushroom tortellini with a cream sauce , and options you can book ahead such as juicy spare ribs, and a knuckle of pork.
They also have the best Kaisersmarren (fluffy pancake) in the area (in our opinion!)
Best gourmet restaurant
Zum Steirer
Less than 200m from the house, Zum Steirer offers excellent gourmet restaurant meals, as well as traditional specialities. The choise is mainly Styrian food with all its unmistakable delicacies and culinary delights – traditional and genuine
We highly recommend their specials, as you are always treated to something tasty that will delight your tastebuds!
Our favourites off the menu are Steirisches Wurzelfleisch auf Salzkartoffeln mit Gemüsestreifen und Kren (Styrian root meat on boiled potatoes with vegetable strips and horseradish) and Steirischer Backhendlsalat (Styrian fried chicken salad)

Best restaurant for a wide choice
Alpenrose
Alpenrose is a hotel in the centre of the village, with a large dining area, and offers a good choice of dishes for all tastes! They offer traditional Austrian dishes and international specialities.
The offer ranges from the free choice of menu in the à la carte restaurant to cozy barbecue evenings and the traditional farmer’s buffet. There is also a salad bar to feast on!
Best restaurant for cheese fondue
Schweizerhuette
A magical evening in the Schweizerhuette up at 1500m at the Hochkeil area!
Go early to see the sun go down, then head on inside to the cosy restaurant. The only choices you are offered are Cheese fondue, served with crusty baguette, various hams, vegetables, and fruits, or Kaisersmarren (fluffy pancakes). The cheese mixture is their own recipe, and is deliciously moorish!
Reservations are essential as places are limited inside the hut. You need to contact Berghotel Arthurhaus to reserve.
Best restaurant with a view and a sledge
Pausbauer
Situated about 200m above Mühlbach, you can either drive up, or take a 40 minute walk uphill to the Pausbauer restaurant where family Ammer welcome you, and you are blessed with amazing views of the Hochkonig. There are tables outside to benefit from the view, or you can eat in the cosy interior.
The kitchen offers a mixture of typical Austrian cuisine, grilled dishes, regional delicacies, light salads and products from their farm for snacks. The Fleischkrapfen with sauerkraut (Meat fritters with sauerkraut) are a speciality. Try out their home made schnapps!
In winter, you can borrow a sledge, and sledge down the hill back to the village. It makes it into an extra special meal out!
